Clark Bar & Rabies
Posted by Bryan

Last night, we took the children to the annual madness that is the before-the-school-year open house. We (Kelli and I) have good first impressions about both the teachers assigned to our children this year. Cotter, despite a bravado performance, is a little nervous about starting kindergarten. Also, he keeps forgetting her name. He keeps calling her Mrs. Colt. Her name, though, is Mrs. Clark. Kelli has employed a successful memory aid for my absent-minded son. So, for at least the immediate future, he'll be referring to her (hopefully only in third person accounts) as "Noah's Ark Mrs. Clark." He didn't catch the sarcasm in my equally-lyrical, "Don't be a dolt and call her Mrs. Colt."

Kaylyn, on the other hand, has been assigned to a teacher with a memorable name. Ms. Raby. Unfortunately, my juvenile and pedantic mind cannot allow an utterance of the possessive form of her name to go unanswered with a nonsequiter:

Concerned Parent: Do you know where Ms. Raby's classroom is?

Stupid, Silly Me: Whatcha doin' with that gun, Travis?

CP: Were you exposed to asbestos as a child?

Hopefully, I'll get my childish giggling under control by the first parent-teacher conference.

While we were there in Ms. Raby's room (heh), we overheard another mother say to her something like, 'I hope you know my daughter reads at a third-grade level. You'll need to be ready for her. She's going to be the best reader in your class."

I stood up dramatically, pushed the 2nd-grader-sized desk behind which I sat clear across the room in a chattering CCCCHHHSSSCHHHHAAWWWNNNKKKK and pointed at her...

"What....ever!"

Then, I pulled out Kaylyn's SRA scores from last year, threw them in front of her and yelled triumphantly, "HA! In YOUR face!"

Okay. Not really.

But I wanted to.

Kelli restrained me.

But its clear the gauntlent has been thrown.

She better be ready to reap the whirlwind.

To have parents of my second graders that involved. Would be a nice change. Back to school night last week...had only 4 parents show up...even with personal invitation made by the children.

To have children in second grade again would be such a blessing......my baby is moving out of our home and into a condo for her second year of college and year-round employment. Big step for her - bigger for Mom & Dad. Enjoy every moment Bryan, and next time............PUSH THE DESK!

It's amazing to think that Mo's at the age to "try her wings." I just heard from Dylan about how he stayed in Junction all summer, and feels God calling him to China at Christmas time.

Am I allowed to keep thinking of them as the kids who re-enacted the hits from "Grease" in my living room and how weren't strong enough to make the journey to Denver without group vomiting on the way?
