Die Spam! Die!

Another change in the commenting system for you.

You can now post without previewing, however, you must now also include the mystery letter in the field at the bottom of the comment page. Right below the smilies, right above the post, preview, and close buttons.

The mystery letter will be pretty obvious. Promise.

This is similar to the solution that I was trying to install a few weeks ago, however not quite as sophisticated.

Hope this works. If it doesn't we will try something else.

Just curious. Which is better, being required to preview before posting or putting a letter in a field before posting? Let me know in the comments.

I found this solution here.

Well, it's up to you--it'll foil most generic 'bots. However, it's only a single letter, and it's in cleartext, so if anyone wanted to set up a 'bot to periodically hit your site, it would be really easy to do. You'll need a frequently changed, graphically-displayed, non-dictionary word code to really up your security. OTOH, if your goal is just to make it marginally more inconvenient to hit your site, either this or previewing works. Since previewing is actually only two clicks, and preview is also useful for proofreading, I'd say it beats the click-shift-type-click for the code letter.

But that's just me. Your frequent flyers have the opinions that count.

I figured the preview requirement was for spammers. I think I prefer the letter option. Less steps.

As long as this works for you guys, it's easy enough for us...
