No, Virginia, there really is no...

This morning, I've been given the opportunity to share a devotional for Cotter's first Upward Basketball game, the league for which is held in a Methodist church's gymnasium. All four teams of 5-year-olds will stop during half-time and I'll speak for five minutes. I'm torn between a couple different options:

  • An introduction to Calvin's TULIP

  • The illusion of Free Will

  • Daniel's 69-plus-one-week-of-years prophecy

  • The Antichrist is alive today, is there any chance you're related?

  • Santa is really just your daddy, or maybe some guy hired by the Mall HR dept., sorry to be the one to break the news

I'm expecting good things. I'll keep you; posted, of course.

Actually, the US Santa Claus is a huge international, multi-century game of telephone. What comes out today may have no relation to the original man but he did exist and had a pretty neat story. Santa Claus started out as St. Nicholas, a bishop in the 4th century Church who lived in the area that is now Turkey and was noted for his generosity and his intense desire to give anonymously. Whether or not you believe in a version of christianity that goes in for saints, the original stories are very educational and inspirational.
