I watched approximately 20 seconds of the latest mother-daughter reality TV offering on E! the other night, detailing the life of the ex-wife and adult daughter of former SackMaster® Mark Gastineau.
Is 20 seconds long enough to make a snap judgment and derisively comment on the sad state of the culture, based on this programming. Probably so, but even if it is not, let's still use my brief encounter with this vain mom and vapid daughter to launch into a mini-rant.
I don't know if Mark will ever be on the show. I doubt I'll be watching to find out. Yet, the fact that his name is attached to the show means that he is undeniably linked to it, willfully or not. Accordingly, his character will either be affirmed or besmirched by the "characters" bearing his name, by the conduct they present.
They are, by title, "his" girls. Not that he "owned" them, but by their own identification, he had (for whatever time) responsibility for them as the head of his household.
The daddy/ex-husband may not give a five-step drop about these matters, but a person's name is much more than an alliterative velar TV show title. His legacy as both spouse and father are on the line here, fairly or not. Directly or indirectly, his discernment, wisdom, and even parenting will be under pressure of a bull rush. Again, this may be premature, but from previews, I'm not guessing either of these gals intends to exhibit a Proverbs 31 mindset, and stands to redefine "The New York Sack Exchange." If that be the case, the former Jet will find himself once again at a defensive end.
And this is what passes for entertainment.
