Three cornerbacks with their first three picks. Where do you think the Broncos were hurting last year?
I am thrilled with the selection of Maurice Clarett. I figure Shanahan got a steal. Projected as a 6th or 7th rounder because of the whole two-years-off-and-got-outrun-by-linemen, played-at-a-football-factory-but-got-busted thing, Denver had nothing to lose by picking him up at 101 with a supplemental. The upside is huge, and if he's a bust, it was a bust on a flyer of a bonus pick.
And I have to assume it's a positive from Momo's P.O.V. A young former stud with a chip on the shoulder and much to prove...in a system where Fatty McTubby from Slow & Pudgy University could maybe rush for a thousand yards...he's got to think his prospects are good if he's willing to do the work.
Other than that, the draft got a big "meh" from me...not a single "wow" factor in the draft, near as I can tell.
April 24, 2005 9:30 PMWHY would they want Clarett? He's done NOTHING since he was hurt -- he hasn't run against a defense in two years. I can understand taking a chance on him, but he's not worth a draft pick -- and I cheered for him when he was a Buckeye.
Posted by: Warren at April 25, 2005 6:36 PMThe upside is too big and the expense too small...a pick they otherwise wouldn't have had, at the possibility that he might just be fired up enough to be something special. If this were a questionable quarterback, I'd be grumpy about it, probably. But because of Denver's reputation with running backs, I think we might just have made a steal.
Feel free to save this and use it to mock me when he gets cut for being a flop.
