The annual meeting of Southern Baptists has concluded, and you can read all about it at Baptist Press, if you are so inclined. Here's a summary:
I'm looking forward to reading around to see how the emerging leaders dialogue went. Initial searches have been futile....and that's not good. I may not be looking in the right places.
Next year, Greenville, SC.
June 23, 2005 10:27 AMWhy did the Disney boycott end? I hadn't heard that they changed the policies that had y'all so upset.
Posted by: Dan at June 24, 2005 4:40 PMI don't know, to be honest, what (if anything) changed. But to be candid, I don't know if I ever heard of any real "buy in" for the boycott when it was announced. I can't tell you of a single person who said "we're going to boycott Disney because my denomination said to do so." My family's personal "boycott" is just how we live life...we supported what they did right by purchasing or watching, and didn't support what they did wrong by staying away from it.
One great thing (IMO) about being a Southern Baptist is that resolutions coming from the SBC are not binding upon an individual or a church, in the practice of respecting the autonomy of the believer and the local church. Participation is not required.
I personally think that one reason the boycott was ending "officially" was the opportunity for the denomination to make some positive news about what the SBC stands for rather than what it stands against. I don't know whether or not that was accomplished, since I wasn't around a TV for the news.
I did read that the verbiage of the terminal resolution was to exhort parents to exercise discernment, to which I say if you need a meeting of 11,000 Southern Baptist messengers to tell you that, you've got bigger problems that need serious attention.
Posted by: Bryan at June 25, 2005 11:01 AMThanks for the thoughtful response. I've been boycotting Disneyworld ever since I didn't have the time or money to go!
