Our church has just "been put on alert" to house evacuees from Rita. The news says the coastal cities are evacuating in phases. The unofficial word is that FEMA is handing out maps and phone books to evacuees to folks to help them find temporary lodging (already near zero-occupancy due to Katrina).
We've opted to suspend accepting new Katrina responsibilities until the demands of Rita are more fully understood. We're currently navigating 10 families (representing 52 individuals) through DFW assimilation. These families have worked with our "navigators" (typically a Sunday school class or department) to find housing, furniture, basic identification, employment, schooling, vehicles, and other needs. Our folks provided several meals for over 600 evacuees and over 60 volunteers, gathered and distributed food, clothing, and goods for numerous families. We received news yesterday of 100 additional Katrina families in need of similar care.
God's people continue to respond, and prepare for the next challenge. Pray for God to calm the waters, and prepare for the opportunity to glorify His Name.
UPDATE: I've changed my "Katrina" Email folder to my "Katrina/Rita" Email folder. And we're talking with South Texas family about "coming to visit for the weekend."
