I'm taking a "wait-and-see" approach to Harriet Miers' appointment as a SCOTUS associate justice. Perhaps its because I naively voted for Clinton in '92 that I'm willing to not hold against her her late 80's financial support of Gore and Bentsen. I'm figuring at worst she'll be a judge in O'Conner's mold, and at best, she'll be a strict constructionist.
I do think she wears too much eyeliner, though. And while I'm willing to give a pass on the cosmetic issue, I won't be surprised to see it come up as a desperate salvo by the opposing congressional idealogues leaning ever-leftward. Maybe it won't be as big an issue once she's in the black robe. Or maybe it'll be worse. Clearly, I know nothing about fashion.
Also, as a 60-year old nominee, her 'shelf life' isn't as long as her new Chief Justice. I don't know that this matters for anything. But it's an observation, and if it plays out to be important later on, I'll be sure to overstate my prescience.
