Reflections...Winners
Posted by Bryan

I've needed to post these for a while, and haven't had a chance.

Kaylyn and Cotter took part in their school's Reflections contest...a school wide deal where they're given a topic and they can submit a contribution in one of several categories. This year's topic was "I Wonder..."

They each won their respective categories, and now go on to district wide competition. So....what follows are their winning contributions in the prose and poetry categories for Cotter and Kaylyn, respectively.

I Wonder Why by Cotter McAnally

I wonder why there are seasons. Why do seasons have to be specific names? Can’t they be names like “Leaf Season” in fall, “Snow Season” in winter, “Hot Season” in Summer, and “Flower Season” in Spring? Can’t Summer be cold and Spring be when the leaves fall and fall be when there are lots of flowers and winter when it is hot? Can’t they be named when people play the sports at that season like “Football Season” in Fall, “Baseball Season” in Spring, “Basketball Season” in Winter and “Soccer Season” in Summer?

WHAT EVER THE NAMES ARE, I LOVE ALL FOUR SEASONS!

    My Toes by Kaylyn McAnally

    My toes
    have me full of wonder.
    If I didn’t have toes…
…ballet would be no small feat
…my toe rings would have no home
…I’d have no little piggies to go to market
    …my sandals wouldn’t flip flop.

The more I think about my toes…
    …those toes do a lot!

    I…
    …wiggle them when they itch
…pop them when I feel like it
…color their nails with pretty pink paint

I even use them as pencil picker-uppers!

    My toes are Wonder-full!

    Hmm…what’s that smell?

    Maybe it’s my toes.

My toes…nose…has me full of wonder…

Kaylyn and Cotter - How refreshing to see such writing skills in ones so young. During my years of teaching English, it was always exciting to discover children who loved to write. What sharp minds you have. I look forward to seeing your work in years to come.
