I've had a few incidental brushes with various degress of celebrity. I don't want to rank them, because that's just a whole level of stress with which I'm not ready to tango. Instead...I'll just review the list, as best I can remember it:
I define these experiences as being totally random and unplanned without any appropriate context whatsoever. Just an abstract intersection of two life paths. It counts if you accidentally bump in to John Elway at the Super Market, but not if you are at the Bronco game to watch him play.
So, the question: what are your brushes with celebrity?
September 6, 2006 7:22 PMWorking in radio I get to talk to a lot of people who are well known in Australia.
Many years ago I was stage manager for an event that featured guest speakers such as 'Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf, Mikhail Gorbachev and several other very high profile people.
Posted by: Rodney Olsen at September 6, 2006 10:08 PMWAIT! WAIT! I have been reading Spare Change long enough to know that I think you missed one encounter.
Can you think of it?
I believe your met Urkel (no clue how to spell that) at your church. Am I right?
Posted by: Christopher at September 7, 2006 12:51 AMPhyllis Diller. And she was terribly rude.
Naomi Judd. And her skin was like porcelain, but she had no manners.
Posted by: Angie at September 7, 2006 12:31 PMMy mother and I were at a check out counter in NYC's Macy's when we noticed Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates in Psycho) walking toward us. He looked right at us and gave the creepy Norman Bates smile. *shiver* It was fantastic.
Posted by: jen at September 7, 2006 4:33 PMI could also name some journalists that I've encountered here in the courthouse. But that would be a long, boring list.
Also, does sitting in the same row with Ali al Tamimi count?
Posted by: jen at September 7, 2006 4:36 PMOh yeah, I attended the wedding of a former roommate whose groom grew up with Joe Gibbs' sons. Joe was at the wedding, of course, since his oldest son was the best man.
Posted by: jen at September 7, 2006 4:38 PMEasy one :)
1) Got struck out by Roger Clemens as a freshman in high school on the varisty baseball team ... three times ... one game ... then, hit a double.
2) Played highschool football with Ty Alert (retired, Philadelphia Eagles)
3) Met Jimmy Buffet at the airport in Jacksonville, FL - while I wait for A plane, and he waited for HIS plane.
4) Got to rub shoulders with Earl Campbell (Houston Oilers) a few times
5) Hit a triple on my 18th birthday off of Nolan Ryan in the Houston Astrodome during a baseball clinic ... I don't think he was throwing his good stuff at us ...
6) Had Vince Gill play my guitar in my home some 15 years ago.
7) Got backstage passes to George Strait ... from George Strait ... helped him chase a dog.
and, many many more ... fun, fun, fun!
Posted by: Tony Rosen at September 8, 2006 3:12 AMI worked at a Christian bookstore for several years and we had tons of in-store events. I met Amy when she was still with Gary, Smitty, Avalon, Susan Ashton, Annointed, Twila, Steven Curtis and his wife, Sandi Patty, Michael O'Brian, the entire cast of the Emmanuel Tour (lots of artists), etc. Funny story about Steven...while he was at our store his wife came to the register to make a purchase. I did not recognize her from the previous pictures of them so I proceeded to tell her about our perks card and how it could benefit her if she shopped with us again.
Posted by: Matt at September 8, 2006 8:36 AMAaaawwww,
I have never met anyone famous! :(
Could be because I am usually completely oblivious to everything in public, everything except what my children are up to/into/climbing on/picking up/eating/talking to.LOL
