High School Muse-ical
Posted by Bryan

This morning, my children were watching the Disney flick High School Musical with their cousins Samantha and Mitchell. I was in here..."the office"...working in my Bible study for tomorrow evening (Christ in the Old Testament...please join me, if you're nearby and available!)

I don't know a lot about this film. I think there's a boy named Troy in it, and at some point in the drama he's encouraged to "get his head in the game." Honestly, I've not watched this movie at all, and don't really plan to if I can avoid it by just about any means necessary. Kelli assures me that it's appropriate for the kids. However, I confess that today, when the first song began, it caught my ear. Perhaps it was because of what I was focused upon in my own endeavors, but I found the lyrics to be surprisingly full of devotional potentiality.

To wit:

Start of Something NewLiving in my own world
    Didn't understand
    That anything can happen
    When you take a chance
    I never believed in
    What I couldn't see
I never opened my heart (ooh)
    To all the possibilities (ooh)
I know that something has changed
    Never felt this way
    And right here tonight

    This could be the start
    Of something new
    It feels so right
To be here with you (ooh)
And now looking in your eyes
I feel in my heart (feel in my heart)
    The start of something new

Now who'd of ever thought that (ooh)
We'd both be here tonight (ooh yeah)
And the world looks so much brighter (brighter)
    With you by my side

I know that something has changed
    Never felt this way
    I know it for real

The song continues with a lot of repeats and oohs and yeahs, but I have seen far less theologically-solid songs find their way into contemporary worship experiences.

These lyrics effectively express the emotion of new, saving faith.

I could totally see this being sung in a junior high worship as a "call to worship."

But then again, that could be why I'm in education ministry.

I had never thought about the lyrics in that way, but good one!
