Here's a story about "seasoned" missionaries who are flunking retirement.
My in-laws are retirement flunkees. Sam, Kelli's dad, has gone from a lifelong service of ministry to local churches through the denomination to enjoy a retirement marked by service of ministry to local churches. He has recently begun a second stint as an intentional interim pastor, helping churches transition from where they are to where they believe God is calling them to be (and go). And also worth mentioning, her mom Ruth Lynn continues in the important-but-oft-overlooked service as his helpmate, being an encourager, teacher, intercessor, and trusted counselor (but without the financial recompense). Their impact in these opportunities is a blessing to witness.
This is how I envision retirement, for it is how I've observed it in the people I respect the most. The call to serve others and to pursue the mission God sets before you only ends when your life does. How that expression of calling and mission pursuit is manifested through life will change (often several times), but its own "shelf life" is concurrent with life's.
Every biblical example I can think of exemplifies living in God's design in the fullness of one's days, many of whom are presented in their "latter years" still faithful and obedient. May I never feel as though I have "done my time," and earned a respite apart from the rest promised in eternity.
