John Weber, Friend & Cowboy Chaplain, has Died
Posted by Bryan

I'm saddened to learn of the death of my friend John Weber, chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys. John died of a heart attack yesterday while swimming at a local YMCA. He was 59 years old.

I met John through a mutual friend, the men's ministry lay leader at our church. John has been a friend to our church for several years. John was the lead speaker at our men's retreat last year, and he brought Cowboys Chris Boniol, Russell Maryland, and Kenyon Coleman with him. It was a significant experience for me and for many of our church's men.

John returned to our church for our Super Bowl party. He spoke at half-time and effectively shared the gospel with the crowd that had gathered there that day. We saw many people trust in Christ as a result of his willingness to share the love of God through Christ with them that day.

In my brief friendship with John, I came to know a man who was humble beyond measure, yet supremely confident in his identity in Christ. This empowered him to speak with calm authority to young men who make millions of dollars playing a highly volatile, violent sport. He regularly dispensed the blessings of assurance, perspective, and comfort.

While heaven rejoices at John's home-going, the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas-Fort Worth community mourn a significant loss. May we all learn from his example and strive to reproduce it by being grace-filled, peace-bringing, and love-sharing. I thank God for this man's man who had the fortitude to be faithful and the integrity to be God's man in his home, his church, his community, and to his team. May the Lord bless his wife, his children and extended family in their grief, and may He provide them with the mercies of gentle memories of laughter and joy from this great, godly man.
